The ones from back then or the ones from now?
For decades, the small GTIs were built according to a very simple formula: light weight, relatively small engines, and the need to make the most of every horsepower. Today, they’re faster, more efficient, and more capable than ever, but they also represent a completely different way of understanding driving.
Since the late 1970s, GTIs, hatchbacks, and compact sports cars have built their character around a seemingly simple formula: small bodies, relatively powerful engines, and as little weight as possible.
For many years, that was precisely their appeal. They weren’t necessarily very fast cars in absolute terms, but they could be extraordinarily fun to drive. They were enjoyed for their lightness, the immediacy of their responses, and, above all, because they demanded to be driven well.
You had to maintain your speed, choose the right gear, position the car before entering the turn, and work to make the most of every horsepower. They moved, swayed, and weaved, forcing the driver to be much more engaged.
Many didn’t even weigh 1,000 kilos. Later, they gradually exceeded 1,200 and 1,300, while power increased to compensate. Finally came the compact cars with 300, 350, and even over 400 CV, capable of delivering performance that, just a few decades ago, was the preserve of sports cars in a much higher class.
The question is inevitable:

Have we simply traded one form of entertainment for another?
Modern sports compacts are just as good. Quite the contrary: they’ve never been faster, safer, stiffer, or more capable.
They have massive brakes, extraordinary tires, sophisticated differentials, adaptive suspensions, and electronic systems capable of handling power levels that, not too long ago, seemed incompatible with a practical front-wheel- or all-wheel-drive car.
But that capability has also changed the way we enjoy them.
Back then, a small GTI let you feel how the weight shifted, how the front axle worked, and how the rear began to respond—all without having to reach excessive speeds. Today, many compact cars are just beginning to show their full potential when their speed is already hardly suitable for public roads.
We don’t believe that one era is necessarily better than the other, but they do represent two completely different ways of understanding a sports car.

The Golf GTI and the Birth of a Category
The Volkswagen Golf GTI wasn’t literally the first small, fast car in history, but it was the car that turned this formula into a recognizable category.
When it first went on sale in 1976, it combined 110 CV with a weight of around 810 kilos. It was practical, unassuming, relatively affordable, and fast enough to give much more serious cars a run for their money.
From then on, almost all manufacturers wanted to create their own version.
Peugeot found its formula with the 205 GTI and the 205 Rallye; Renault with the 5 GT Turbo, the Clio 16V, and the Williams; Citroën with the AX Sport, the AX GTI, and later the Saxo VTS; Fiat with the Uno Turbo; Opel with the Kadett, Corsa, and Astra GSi; Honda with its Civic VTi and Type R; and Japanese manufacturers introduced such distinctive models as the Suzuki Swift GTI, the Daihatsu Charade GTti, the Mazda 323 GT-R, and the Nissan Sunny GTI-R.
They were all different, but they shared a common goal: to quickly build a lightweight car.

1976–1999: The Era of Lightness
Over the past two decades, small sports cars and GTIs typically weighed between 700 and 1,100 kilograms, with power outputs that usually ranged from 90 to 160 CV.
There were some much more sophisticated exceptions, such as the Nissan Sunny GTI-R or the Mazda 323 GT-R, both of which were turbocharged and had all-wheel drive, but even those production compact cars barely exceeded 1,200 kilos.
Note on the figures: Weights are approximate and correspond, whenever possible, to the curb weight of the most representative European version. Differences may exist depending on the country, equipment, and the type approval system used.

A Citroën AX Sport combined 95 CV with a weight of just 720 kilos. A Peugeot 205 Rallye weighed less than 800. The Suzuki Swift GTI weighed in at around 750 kilos, while much more powerful cars, such as the Honda Civic Type R EK9, still weighed only around 1,050.
Even the most sophisticated models had very modest performance figures. The Nissan Sunny GTI-R combined over 220 CV, a turbocharger, and all-wheel drive with a curb weight of approximately 1,220 kilos. The Mazda 323 GT-R offered a similar package with a curb weight of just over 1,200.
They didn’t need extraordinary performance figures because lightness played a role in everything: acceleration, braking, weight transfer, agility, and component wear.
By the late 1990s, however, the change was already becoming apparent. The Golf IV GTI and the Audi S3 were larger, more comfortable, better insulated, and better equipped. They were also considerably heavier.
In a way, they were paving the way that the entire category would eventually follow.
The Clio RS 182: One of the Last of the Old School
If one had to name a car that represented the end of that philosophy, one would probably have to look to the 2004 Renault Clio RS 182.
It had a two-liter naturally aspirated engine, a manual transmission, front-wheel drive, 182 CV, and weighed close to 1,090 kilos. It was fast, but it was still a car where driving fun depended much more on its overall balance than on raw power figures.
You had to shift gears, keep the engine in the right range on the tachometer, maintain your speed, and understand how the chassis worked.
It wasn’t literally the last small, lightweight sports car. After that, there were some interesting exceptions, such as the Suzuki Swift Sport, the Volkswagen up! GTI, the Toyota Yaris GRMN, and the Hyundai i20 N.
But the Clio 182 was arguably one of the last models to so clearly bring together all the ingredients of the original formula: a naturally aspirated engine, a manual transmission, a weight of just over one metric ton, and power that still required you to make the most of every horsepower.


2000–2026: More Weight, More Power, and More Complexity
Starting at the turn of the century, the pace of change accelerated.
Safety requirements, increased size, greater structural rigidity, additional equipment, turbocharged engines, larger brakes, wheels, electronic systems, and, in some cases, all-wheel drive gradually pushed these cars into a whole new dimension.
First, they surpassed 1,200 kilos. Then, they surpassed 1,300 and 1,400. Finally, compact cars with more than 300 CV and weights close to or exceeding 1,500 kilos appeared.

The table shows how power increased much more rapidly than weight.
The Honda Civic Type R EP3 had already symbolically crossed the thresholds of 200 CV and 1,200 kilos. The Focus RS went from 215 CV in 2002 to 305 in 2009 and 350 in its third generation. The Audi RS3 reached 400 CV, and the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S even surpassed that figure.
These cars are no longer simply sporty versions of a conventional compact car. In terms of performance, braking, traction, and dynamic capabilities, they rival even the most serious sports cars.
From building a lightweight car quickly to masking its weight with power
The transformation can be summarized quite simply.
During the 1980s, many of these cars weighed between 700 and 950 kilos and produced between 90 and 130 CV. In the 1990s, the weight began to approach 1,000 or 1,100 kilos, while power output frequently reached 150 or 160 CV.
In the early 2000s, compact cars began to weigh more than 1,200 and 1,300 kilos. To compensate, engines producing 200, 225, and 250 CV were introduced.
Then came the definitive leap forward: 300, 350, and over 400 CV, active differentials, dual-clutch transmissions, and all-wheel drive.
The goal was no longer simply to build a lightweight, fast car. The industry began building much more powerful and sophisticated cars, capable of masking their weight through immense mechanical and electronic capabilities.

Faster, but not necessarily more useful
Today’s sports compacts are objectively better in almost every measurable aspect.
They accelerate faster, brake better, provide better traction, offer better protection for their occupants, and allow for a level of comfort that many of their predecessors could not provide.
But fun can’t always be measured with a stopwatch.
Back then, people enjoyed these cars because they were lightweight, responded instantly, and required some effort to get the most out of every horsepower. They weren’t necessarily very fast, but they could be a lot of fun.
They were moving, swaying, and weaving, forcing the driver to take action constantly.
Today, to push a compact car close to its limit of 300 or 350 CV, you have to drive at much higher speeds. The immense capabilities of the chassis, tires, and brakes mean that their full potential can hardly be explored safely on public roads.
It’s not that they’ve lost their sense of fun. They’ve just shifted it to a different setting.
Its natural habitat is increasingly the racetrack, where there is enough space to brake hard, use all the power, and push an extraordinarily efficient car to its limits.

The category that has practically disappeared
Perhaps the problem isn’t that modern sports compacts have gotten worse. Quite the opposite: they’ve never been faster or more capable.
What has practically disappeared is a different category altogether: that of the small, lightweight GTI—relatively inexpensive, easy to maintain, and with power that could be harnessed almost entirely on a good road.
What new car can truly replace a Peugeot 205 GTI, a Renault Clio RS 182, or a Suzuki Swift GTI?
Probably none of them directly.
There have been attempts to preserve some of that philosophy. The Suzuki Swift Sport kept its weight under one metric ton; the Volkswagen up! GTI deliberately returned to modest power output; the Hyundai i20 N offered a fairly traditional approach; and the Toyota GR Yaris managed to maintain a compact size and reasonable weight.
But even these cars now belong to a different technical, regulatory, and economic context.

What do we prefer?
We don’t believe that one era is necessarily better than another.
A modern, compact car with 300 CV can be an extraordinary machine: fast, efficient, safe, and capable of holding its own on the track against much more expensive sports cars.
A small GTI from the 1980s or 1990s can’t compete with it in terms of performance, but it offers a more direct connection between the driver, the car’s weight, the engine, and the road.
These are two completely different ways of understanding driving.
One forces you to work with what you have.
The other makes it possible to achieve performance levels that seemed impossible in a practical car just a few decades ago.
